Pandora Rolled Ice Cream Brings New Treat to MHK

Thai-style rolled ice cream is one of the latest food trends to sweep the nation, and Manhattan, KS now has a new place to try it for yourself.

Mprll Lee, owner and head chef of Pandora Rolled Ice Cream, moved to the States from China over 10 years ago. She says she loves Manhattan’s small town community and how nice everyone is. For the last year, her friend and business partner, who owns a rolled ice cream shop in another state, taught her how to make the dessert so she could start a restaurant of her own.

The location, which just opened yesterday, is located in Laramie Plaza across from Library Discount Liquor. It’s close to campus, so students can easily walk here. Word of mouth has already started getting out, as we had to pause mid-interview as 2 groups of students walked in.

The ice cream is made fresh from real ingredients. Mprll pointed out excitedly that the Thai tea ice cream I enjoyed had been made with actual Thai tea leaves. Making the ice cream rolls is a labor-intensive process that takes about 5 minutes. You can choose from one of the suggested combinations, or make up your own from the long list of ingredients and flavors. Once you have made your selection, the ice cream is placed on a cold slab, where it is chopped repeatedly until its able to spread into thin sheets, giving it a unique consistency. These sheets are then rolled and placed in a cup, where they can then be topped with all kinds of garnishes, making each dessert a unique experience.
