Wahoo Restaurant Closes in Aggieville

Friday, Wahoo staff notified employees that the restaurant would close and not reopen for the foreseeable future, located at 1101 Moro Street.

The restaurant opened in 2012 at the East end of Moro Street by Megan & Austin Schuldt and Darin Eible and was the first and only tenant since the building was built on the corner of 11th and Moro.

The menu was one that infused flavors of the Pacific Rim with Traditional and American Contemporary Cuisine. The current owners of Wahoo have confirmed that the business is closed and declined to comment.

Wahoo attracted many customers through its lively atmosphere, Sunday brunch, lively bar and patio, private room for small parties, and the fresh seafood menu. Last January, Wahoo was featured by Only In Your State for The Unassuming Kansas Restaurant That Serves The Best Seafood You’ve Ever Tried.

Aggieville and specifically the locally owned Manhattan food businesses have a churn right now that is very difficult to avoid. According to the Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Advocacy, roughly 80% of small businesses survive the first year. Only about half of small businesses survive passed the five-year mark, ranging from 45.4% to 51% depending on the year the business was started. Beyond that, only about one in three small businesses get to the 10-year mark and live to tell the tale.

There is a difference between failure and closure. Many restaurants can fall to a bad location, poor management team, lack of capital to fund the operation, little to no advertising, miscalculated food cost percentages, bad customer service, competition, too many staff members or even owners being “hands off”.

Many restaurants and small businesses are ran as owner/operator setups. This can be a very difficult lifestyle for many. Our city seems to be gaining more franchise restaurants and with the general population moving towards shopping online, we fall to not supporting our local community members working hard to provide a unique experience.

As look we look forward to the Aggieville Vision and Region Reimagined, your input is needed about how to improve this district for better viability of our local restaurants and shopping stores.

  • Very disappointed that there was no notice and people are stuck with gift cards purchased for Christmas gifts and are unable to use them.

  • The city council needs to adopt an ordinance requiring business owners in Aggieville to be open during the day. You can’t have a vibrant street when you have monopoly ownership of the businesses, I’m looking at you Johnny Kaw, and those businesses are closed during daytime hours.

Additionally, the Varneys sign should have been declared a historic cultural monument and corporate chain Rally House should not have been allowed to tear it down. That was a very, very sad day for Aggieville and Manhattan.
